Custom box printing is how your artwork, brand colors, and finishes land on a box. The method and color system decide how accurate, premium, and affordable the result is.

Packaging Vista prints custom boxes on both offset (litho) and digital presses. We print in full CMYK plus Pantone for exact brand color. Add finishes like soft-touch lamination, foil stamping, embossing, and spot UV.

There are no die, plate, or setup fees. The minimum is 100 boxes. Every order comes with free design help, a free dieline and 3D mockup, an 8 to 10 business-day turnaround, and free US shipping. Ready to order a specific box? Browse our custom boxes.

Key takeaways

  • Two methods: offset for color accuracy and volume, digital for short runs and speed.
  • Color: full CMYK plus Pantone (PMS) matching for exact brand color.
  • Finishes: soft-touch, foil, emboss, and spot UV applied after printing.
  • No setup fees: 100-box minimum, free dieline & 3D mockup, free US shipping.
  • New to packaging? Start with our beginner’s guide to custom packaging.

Offset vs digital printing

We run both and recommend the right one for your job. Offset uses metal plates. It gives the most accurate color and the lowest per-unit cost at volume. Digital prints straight from the file with no plates. That makes it faster and cheaper for short runs and prototypes.

Color: CMYK and Pantone matching

We print full-color CMYK for photos and rich artwork, and Pantone (PMS) spot colors for brand colors that must match every reorder. Many boxes use both. See our CMYK vs Pantone guide for how to set up color correctly.

Finishes we print

Finishes are applied after printing and are where a box turns premium: matte, gloss, and soft-touch lamination, gold, silver, rose-gold, and holographic foil stamping, embossing and debossing, spot UV, and window patching. See our box finishes guide.

Print-ready artwork spec

Clean files prevent reprints. Send print-ready artwork with these settings:

Setting Needed value
FormatPDF/X-1a, PDF/X-4, or layered AI/PSD
Resolution300 DPI at final print size
Color modeCMYK (plus Pantone spot channels)
Bleed1/8 in (3 mm) on every outer edge
Safe zoneType / logos 1/8 in inside trim
FontsOutlined (converted to paths)
Rich blackC40 M30 Y30 K100 (not four-color 100)
Foil / spot UV / embossSeparate spot channel layer
DielineIncluded as non-printing layer

Our offset presses run to ISO 12647-2 for standardized color reproduction. If you only have a logo, our free design team builds the print-ready file for you and sends a proof. See our artwork and dieline guide.

Inside printing and large-format work

Printing is not limited to the outside of the box. Interior or lid printing turns the open into a branded moment. That is a full-color pattern, a brand message, or a photo on the inside faces. It is a low-cost way to lift the unboxing on mailer and rigid boxes.

For large formats like shipping cartons and retail displays, we print litho-laminated corrugated. That is offset sheets bonded to fluted board. A big box still gets crisp, full-color graphics, not the coarser look of direct-to-board print. Tell us where the graphics need to land and we will pick the process that reproduces them cleanly at that size.

Proofing: digital proof vs physical sample

Every order comes with a free digital proof. That is a flat and 3D mockup that shows layout, color build, and dielines so you can catch issues before press. For color- or structure-critical projects we also offer a physical pre-production sample. That is a real printed, die-cut, and assembled box you can hold and check against a Pantone reference.

A digital proof confirms the design. A physical sample confirms the material, fit, and exact printed color. If your brand color or product fit has zero margin for error, ask for a sample before the full run.

Common artwork mistakes that cause reprints

Most reprints trace back to a handful of file problems, and all are easy to avoid. The usual culprits: artwork built in RGB not CMYK (colors shift on press), low-resolution images (aim for 300 DPI at final size), missing bleed or type too close to the fold, un-outlined fonts, and a heavy "rich black" that looks muddy.

Our free design team checks every file for these before we print. We fix them or flag them on the proof. Our artwork and dieline guide shows how to set a file up right the first time.

Pricing, minimums, and turnaround

Print pricing depends on the method, color, finishes, size, and quantity. The per-box cost drops as volume rises. There are no die, plate, or setup fees. The minimum is 100 boxes. Standard runs take 8 to 10 business days after proof approval, with rush on hand.

Which print method fits which box

The right print method depends on the box style, the run size, and the finishes you want. Use this as a quick guide when you brief a run:

  • Mailers, subscription boxes, prototypes: digital wins on short runs (under 500) and lets you tweak art between rounds without a plate charge.
  • Retail cartons at scale (1,000 or more): offset gives the sharpest CMYK and the lowest per-unit cost, and pays back the plate cost fast at volume.
  • Luxury and rigid boxes: offset on paper wraps for the cleanest color, then foil, emboss, or spot UV added off-press for the finish stack.
  • Kraft stocks: both methods work, but offset holds ink better on the rough surface. On kraft, expect colors to look muted — the brown fiber shows through and shifts every hue. Pick colors on a printed kraft sample, not on a white monitor.
  • Very short runs or one-off samples: digital. You pay only for the boxes, and turnaround is faster.

Tell us the box style and expected order size on your quote request and we will recommend the method that balances color, cost, and speed for your run.

Reorder consistency: keeping color and quality steady

Custom print is only worth it if the tenth run looks like the first. A few habits keep every reorder on-brand:

  • Approve a printed sample once, then archive it. The sample is your reference for every future run. If a reorder does not match, we compare to the archived box, not to a monitor.
  • Lock in your Pantone (PMS) numbers. Brand colors that live only as CMYK values drift between paper stocks and press days. Adding one or two Pantone spots locks the exact color across reorders.
  • Reuse the same dieline and file. A fresh file for each run invites small changes — a font update, a shifted logo, a new bleed. Keeping a single master file is the simplest way to keep runs identical.
  • Stay on one stock and one finish. A jump from SBS to kraft, or from matte laminate to soft-touch, will change how the printed color reads even with identical inks. Keep both fixed unless you are running a deliberate limited edition.

We keep every customer's approved file, Pantone specs, and last-run notes on record so a reorder starts where the last one left off. Just quote your last PO number.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you print with offset or digital?

Both. Offset gives the most accurate color and the best value at higher volumes. Digital is faster and cheaper for short runs and prototypes. We recommend the right method for your run size on every quote.

Can you match my exact brand color?

Yes. We print full CMYK plus Pantone (PMS) spot colors and proof the result. Your brand color stays the same from the first run to every reorder.

What files do you need to print my box?

Print-ready vector artwork on a dieline, with bleed and a safe zone, in CMYK or Pantone. If you only have a logo, our free design team builds the dieline and print-ready file. We send a proof before we print.

Do you charge plate or setup fees?

No. We never charge die, plate, or setup fees. Switching methods, sizes, or finishes adds no tooling cost. You only pay for the boxes.

Can you print the inside of the box?

Yes. We print interior and lid graphics. That means patterns, messages, or photos on the inside faces. It is a low-cost way to brand the unboxing on mailer and rigid boxes. Just include the interior artwork with your files.

Do you offer a physical proof or sample?

Every order comes with a free digital proof. For color- or structure-critical jobs we can also make a physical pre-production sample. That is a real printed and assembled box. You confirm material, fit, and exact color before the full run.

How do you keep color the same across reorders?

We archive the approved printed sample and your Pantone (PMS) numbers from the first run. Every reorder is proofed against that stored reference, so a run twelve months later matches the run you first approved.

Can you print on kraft or dark stock?

Yes. Kraft prints well with offset and digital, but colors read muted because the brown fiber shifts every hue. For a punchy design on kraft, we can lay down a white ink base first, then print your color on top. That keeps brand colors bright and true.

How long do foil, spot UV, and soft-touch add to production?

Finishes are added off-press, so most add one to two business days to the standard 8–10 day build. Stacked finishes (foil plus soft-touch plus embossing) add a day or two more. Rush is available on any single finish.
